Quantity–quality-based water allocation programming in a reservoir–river system

Abstract Simulation–optimization approaches are useful methods for the assessment of water resource engineering plans and finding best management policy at watershed scale. In this study, to find optimum operation a reservoir with purpose satisfying demands while meeting quantity quality criteria, generic river basin simulation model (MODSIM) is coupled particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm leading construct PSO–MODSIM model. With decision variables reservoir's monthly releases, objective function maximize supply downstream keeping electrical conductivity (EC) in flow lower than predefined level checkpoint, which EC agricultural return flows. Moreover, safe rate defined streamflow should not exceed checkpoint resulting mitigation submerging lands damage. Results obtained by indicate ability proposed simulation–optimization approach solving problem optimal quantity–quality-based allocation reservoir–river system. For instance, decreased 61% state comparing present situation, whereas municipal environmental fully met supplied desirable reliability satisfaction level.
